Starting My Speech Pathology Journey: What I’ve Learned About the Parent’s Role in Speech Therapy

Starting my journey as a speech pathologist at Therapy Talks has been both exciting and eye-opening.

As a new graduate, I knew I would be helping children build their speech and language skills, but what I’ve quickly come to realize is just how important parents are in this journey.

Every child we see here at Therapy talks is unique, with their own strengths and challenges.

In our sessions, we work on speech sounds, language, fluency, and social skills—but real progress happens when these skills are practiced at home, during everyday moments. The simple things—reading together, modelling clear speech, or taking a moment to pause and let a child express themselves—make all the difference.

Parents are their child’s first and most important teachers.

The strategies we use in therapy are just steppingstones, but when parents carry these techniques into daily routines, that’s when real growth happens.

Whether it’s turning mealtime into a language-rich conversation or making speech practice fun through play, these small efforts add up in a big way.

Our role as therapists is to support not just the child, but the whole family. We want parents to feel confident, empowered, and equipped with the tools to help their child succeed.

YOU MAKE THE DIFFERENCE!

We're only here to guide, encourage, and celebrate every little win along the way.

I’m so grateful to be on this journey and to work alongside such dedicated families.

Together, we can help children find their voices and thrive. If you ever have questions or need support, know that we're here to help—because when we work as a team, incredible things happen!
